“I want to congratulate the Colombian government and host communities for its quick and pragmatic humanitarian response to the needs of almost 1 million refugees and migrants from Venezuela; as well as for the 300.000 Colombians that have returned to their country from Venezuela. There are families that are coming for a short period of time, to buy food and medicines, maybe just to have breakfast and then get back to their county. The regularization process of people who are entering Colombia is a role model for the whole region, and UNHCR will continue to support these efforts on registration and documentation in order to ensure a legal status for Venezuelans in Colombia.”

Storyline

Wrapping up his trip to Colombia, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi congratulated the Colombian government and host communities for “its quick and pragmatic humanitarian response to the needs of almost 1 million refugees and migrants from Venezuela, as well as for the 300, 000 Colombians that have returned to their country from Venezuela.”

Speaking at a press conference with the Colombian President, Iván Duque Márquez, Grandi said, “The regularization process of people who are entering Colombia is a role model for the whole region, and UNHCR will continue to support these efforts on registration and documentation in order to ensure a legal status for Venezuelans in Colombia.”

It is estimated that around 35,000 people cross from Venezuela to Colombia each day. Many of them plan to stay. The flow of migrants into Colombia is expected to continue as Venezuela endures economic instability, violence and insecurity.

Filippo Grandi is visiting four Latin American countries - Colombia, Argentina, Peru and Ecuador – in order to assess the needs of Venezuelans who have left their country and the nations hosting them. He is also meeting with governments and partner organizations to discuss regional approaches to address the outflow and bring more international support.
