Storyline

The World Food Programme (WFP) is helping the Indonesian Government to expedite, manage, store, and distribute aid supplies in Sulawesi island, affected by the recent earthquake and tsunami.

WFP is working on logistics, transport and storage of relief supplies in Palu and the airport hub of Balikpapan on the neighbouring island of Borneo.

The agency is due to have 40 trucks in operation in and around Palu by 20 October. These trucks will be available to all aid partners to transport and distribute aid.

Two WFP storage units were set up at Palu airport in early October. Ten more mobile storage hubs are being set up around Palu and Donggala to ensure the smooth flow and distribution of aid to where it is needed.

WFP is liaising closely with the Government of Indonesia – particularly the Indonesian Army (TNI), BNPB, PMI, and the Ministry of Social Affairs – and the ASEAN AHA Centre regarding distribution mechanisms and structures to ensure coordination at all levels.

The Indonesian government estimates that some 68,000 houses have been damaged and 80,000 people have been displaced.
