UNHCR staff in Libya late Tuesday led a new evacuation of refugees from Libya, where they were being held in various detention centres.
After spending a year in a detention centre in Tripoli, Libya, four-year-old Shiva was evacuated alongside other 261 refugees, in the largest such evacuation so far this year.
SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Shiva’s mother, refugee:
“I would like to send her to a good school. Her childhood should not be wasted in prison. I am happy today because she is getting out.”
Two planes were chartered from Mitiga airport in the capital Tripoli, taking the group on to Niger's capital Niamey, where they will be hosted at UNHCR's Emergency Transit Mechanism until durable solutions in third countries are found for them.
In 2018, 2,082 individuals have been evacuated from Libya including 1,675 to Niger, 312 to Italy and 95 to Romania.
