4. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“At its core, violence against women and girls in all its forms is the manifestation of a profound lack of respect – a failure by men to recognize the inherent equality and dignity of women. It is an issue of fundamental human rights. The violence can take many forms – from domestic violence to trafficking, from sexual violence in conflict to child marriage, genital mutilation and femicide. It is an issue that harms the individual but also has far-reaching consequences for families and society.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations:
“With orange as the unifying colour of solidarity, the hashtag HearMeToo is designed to send a clear message: violence against women and girls must end now, and we all have a role to play. We need to do more to support victims and hold perpetrators accountable. But, beyond that, it is imperative that we – as societies -- undertake the challenging work of transforming the structures and cultures that allow sexual harassment and other forms of gender-based violence to happen in the first place.”
7. Wide shot, audience applause
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, Executive Director of UN Women:
“The world needs a comprehensive response to this problem, one that will enable us to get to the truth, one that will ensure there is accountability, but more than anything else, that there is sustainable transformation so that women and girls can live in a word where they can expect not to experience violence. And all of us are part of making sure that we bring about this culture and we end the culture that normalizes abuse of women and girls.”

Secretary-General, United Nations António Guterres today (19 Nov) said violence against women and girls in all its forms “is an issue of fundamental human rights” and one that “harms the individual but also has far-reaching consequences for families and society.”
Guterres was addressing an event under the umbrella of his UNiTE to End Violence against Women campaign at UN Headquarters in New York to discuss innovative good practices that offer solutions for ending violence against women and girls in the #HearMeToo era.
The audience included a large contingent of police officers representing the NYPD Women’s Institute.
The Secretary-General said, “with orange as the unifying colour of solidarity, the hashtag #HearMeToo is designed to send a clear message: violence against women and girls must end now, and we all have a role to play. We need to do more to support victims and hold perpetrators accountable. But, beyond that, it is imperative that we – as societies -- undertake the challenging work of transforming the structures and cultures that allow sexual harassment and other forms of gender-based violence to happen in the first place.”
Also addressing the meeting, the Executive Director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, said “the world needs a comprehensive response to this problem, one that will enable us to get to the truth, one that will ensure there is accountability, but more than anything else, that there is sustainable transformation so that women and girls can live in a word where they can expect not to experience violence.”
The Head of UN Women, which is leading the campaign, said “all of us are part of making sure that we bring about this culture and we end the culture that normalizes abuse of women and girls.”
This year’s United Nations theme for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (25 November) and the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (25 November – 10 December) “Orange the World: #HearMeToo” aims to support women and girls around the world who are coming together in a global movement of solidarity against the historic power imbalances in which sexual harassment and other forms of violence are rooted.
Around the world, the 16 Days of Activism will be a rallying moment to bring together governments, communities, survivors, activists and the public to raise awareness on the urgent need to end violence against women and girls through high-profile events, rallies, and campaigns.
To draw global attention, iconic buildings and monuments will be lit up in orange, the official colour of the UNiTE campaign, symbolizing hope and a violence-free world.
