Storyline

The top United Nations peacekeeping official today (10 Jan) expressed hope for an inclusive dialogue to address key issues in the Central African Republic.

The head of the United Nations Department of Peace Operations, Jean -Pierre Lacroix, pledged to work towards a participatory process where all issues are on the table. He said, "There is a strong willingness on the part of the Central African authorities.”

Lacroix made his comments in the capital, Bangui, on the third day of an official visit to the country aimed at supporting the resumption of dialogue with armed groups under the auspices of the African Union.

Lacroix was joined by the African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, Smail Chergui, at meetings with representatives of with the diplomatic corps and civil society.

Chergui said there is a basis for an agreement between the CAR government and armed groups to be signed quickly.

Once reached, a final agreement between the government and the armed groups must be signed in Bangui, the Central African capital.
