The Force Commander of the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA), General Dennis Gyllensporre, visited Aguelhok in north of the country, after a complex attack against MINUSMA camp which resulted in the deaths of ten and more than 25 injured peacekeepers.
The attack on the peacekeepers happened on Sunday 20 January. MINUSMA forces responded robustly and a number of assailants were killed.
Gen Gyllensporre was accompanied by Sector North Force Commander, MINUSMA Kidal Head of Office, and a Chadian delegation led by the Minister of Defense.

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned the complex attack against the camp of the MINUSMA and he conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the Government of Chad, and the families and loved ones of the deceased. The SG has called on the Malian authorities, as well as the signatory armed groups to the peace agreement, to spare no effort in identifying the perpetrators of this attack so that they can be brought to justice as swiftly as possible.
Attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law.
