Storyline

Under the sweltering sun in Juba, the under-23 South Sudan A and B football teams tackled each other in fierce competition while also sharing messages of peace and unity with the hundreds of fans watching on. The exhibition match was the highlight of National Unity Day celebrations which focused on social cohesion at a critical time in the peace process.

Twenty-year old Chika Sydney Edward Joshua has only been playing football for six years but has already reached the national level. He is passionate about what he calls “a beautiful game that unites people” and hopes that the cessation of hostilities will last so he has the chance to succeed as a professional player.

There was a real sense of celebration at the event, sponsored by the Japanese International Cooperation Agency in partnership with the Government of South Sudan.

People are optimistic about the future in the wake of the signing of the peace agreement last year. They hope that a permanent end to the violence will encourage investment in development and give young South Sudanese a chance to reach their full potential.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan and the international community are supporting peace-building efforts around the country. However, concerns remain about the slow progress in implementing the agreement.
