United Nations Volunteers come from some 80 countries, and serve in about 90 developing nations around the world. Of these more than 1000 volunteers, approximately 20 per cent are women. All are specialists, ranging from doctors and teachers, agronomists and surveyors, to mechanics and weather forecasters – professionals and technicians always in short supply in developing countries. They serve for two years, and apart from a modest living allowance receive no pay – contributing their time and expertise to the cause of development. The film looks at these volunteers and their work in three countries: Bhutan, Yemen Arab Republic and the Comoro Islands. Although each of these nations is classified as a “least-developed country”, geography and history have stamped them with different growth problems and development goals. The film shows the effect that development work in these countries has upon both the volunteers and their hosts.
