Description

The Treaty of Versailles in 1919 established the League of Nations and Geneva was chosen the capital of the New World of Peace. The victors in the First World War – Britain, France, Italy and Japan – were permanent members of the League’s Council. The United States voted to stay out. An enormous richness of actuality film footage recaptures the leading personalities and some triumphs and tragedies of the League of Nations. In 1929, Wall Street crumbled, to be followed by the markets of Paris and London. Unemployment, hunger and desperation were let loose on the industrial world, and even as the Palais de Nations rose in Geneva, forces were being unleashed upon a League of Nations which could not contain them.
