Storyline

On a four-day visit to Ethiopia, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, praised the Government’s openness to new and innovative approaches to improve the lives of the more than 900,000 refugees in the country, as well as the communities hosting them.

Grandi said, “What has developed here is a unique approach to self-reliance of refugees where the Government of Ethiopia has been extremely open; open to innovative approaches as well. The two communities – the host community, the Ethiopian host community and Somali refugees – have been able to work together in harmony.”

Grandi visited a project in Melkadida where investment from Ethiopia and support from the Government is helping refugees and host communities make 1,000 hectares of dry and arid land more productive for all. Melkadida, which lies along the border with Somalia, hosts 200,000 refugees.

Ikea has invested $100 million dollars into facilities for irrigation, power and education and has signed a deal to extend the support for three more.

Ethiopia has a long history of hosting refugees and maintains an open-door asylum policy, giving humanitarian access and protection to those seeking refuge.
