A UN spokesperson told reporters in New York that nearly seven million people in South Sudan face “acute food insecurity” this year.

Speaking today (22 Feb) in New York, spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, told reporters that the number of acutely food insecure people has increased by 13 percent in one year.

Dujarric said the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) reported that “food insecurity continues to be driven by the effects of conflict, insufficient food production and associated population displacement.”

According to the publication, “there is an urgent need for more funds to scale up humanitarian assistance to save lives and protect livelihoods.”
