United Nations Observance of International Women’s Day: “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change”
Description

International Women’s Day (IWD 2019) looked to industry leaders, entrepreneurs, gender equality activists, and women innovators to examine the ways in which innovation can remove barriers and accelerate progress for gender equality, encourage investment in gender-responsive social systems, and build services and infrastructure that meet the needs of women and girls.

The opening segment (from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.) included addresses by the Secretary-General, the President of the General Assembly, the Under Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women, as well as other eminent panelists. Each speaker addressed the power of innovative approaches to reach the paradigm shifts that are necessary to ensure a gender equal world.

The second segment (from 11:00 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.) took the form of a panel discussion composed of prominent industry leaders and activists who are transforming women’s lives by through innovative practices, cutting-edge technology, and sustainable, accessible infrastructure.

This event was meant to identify innovative solutions led by the UN system and its partners to help advance gender equality and transform women’s lives. Participants included: António Guterres, UN Secretary-General; María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés, President UN General Assembly; Geraldine Byrne Nason Chair, 63rd Session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women; Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director, UN Women; Venus Ilagan, Secretary-General of Rehabilitation International; Ellen Ochoa, Veteran Astronaut and Former Director, Johnson Space Centre; Lorraine Twohill, Chief Marketing Officer, Google; Elizabeth Hausler, Founder and CEO, Build Change, and Kiara Nirghin, Student, Scientist and Innovator.

The event also featured musical performances by Ms. Drew Olivia Tillman, Ms. Indira Mahajan, Mr. Everett Suttle and Broadway Singers.
