8. SOUNDBITE (English) Henrietta Fore, Executive Director of the UN International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF):
“We are very worried about disease, because this is the time when cholera begins to be seen, when the mosquitoes go for the stagnant water and the decomposing bodies, and malaria begins, and all sorts of hygiene problems. So, we are worried. It’s a race against time.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Mark Lowcock, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator:
“The world would be smart to be generous in supporting the new government of the DRC. Briefing reporters on their recent visit to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Mozambique, UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore, and humanitarian chief Mark Lowcock today (25 Mar)called for support from the international community in the fight against Ebola in the DRC and relief efforts following the devastating effects of Cyclone Idai.
Fore said the situation for children in the DRC “is quite dire” as it has been “plagued by conflicts, proliferation of armed groups, of disease outbreaks, natural disasters, and sexual violence.”
In this backdrop, Fore said, “Ebola has made this situation even more critical, “and noted that “one thousand people, including 30 percent are children, have been infected with the disease” and “more than six hundred people have died.”
Turning to Mozambique, where latest reports indicate that more than 400 are now confirmed dead, she said it was “a race against time.”
Fore said, “we are very worried about disease, because this is the time when cholera begins to be seen, when the mosquitoes go for the stagnant water and the decomposing bodies, and malaria begins, and all sorts of hygiene problems.”
For his part, Lowcock said “the world would be smart to be generous in supporting the new government of the DRC.”
Felix Tshisekedi. has been the President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo since 24 January 2019.
Lowcock said, “certainly the UN will do everything we can to support the people of the DRC and express our solidarity with them and try to enable the country to move forward.”
Lowcock joined Fore last week in Beni and Butembo in the DRC where they visited Ebola treatment facilities. They also travelled to Beira, Mozambique, which bore the brunt of the cyclone.
