Storyline

In a recent visit to the Libyan capital Tripoli, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said he was moved and shocked by the level of suffering he witnessed after visiting a detention centre for refugees and migrants.

The UN chief visited the centre on Thursday (04 Apr). He said the despair faced by migrants and refugees in Libya was a responsibility for the whole of the international community, not just Libya.

Guterres said, for migrants and refugees in search of a better life who feel compelled to travel through Libya in the hopes of reaching Europe, it would be very difficult to argue that disembarkation in Libya was safe.

He appealed to the international community to understand the need for international refugee law to be fully respected, and to address the migration problem in a way that is compatible with the defence of the interests of the State, but also the human rights of the migrants.
