The Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, today (17 Apr) met with Central African Republic (CAR) President Faustin Archange Touadéra in Bangui.
The delegation, which includes the Commissioner for Peace and Security of the African Union, Smaïl Chergui, and the Managing Director for Africa in the European External Action Service (EEAS), Koen Vervaeke, will meet with the members of the government, the guarantors and facilitators of the political agreement, representatives of political parties and civil society, as well as the diplomats stationed in Bangui during their 5-day visit.
Following that meeting, Mr. Lacroix told reporters that this Agreement is a unique window of opportunity in the country, which must be seized.

On Monday (15 Apr), the delegation took part of the celebration of the first anniversary of a local peace agreement between UPC and the ex-antibaka took place in Bangasou, the capital of Mbomou Prefecture.
The celebration was marked by the launch of the Peace Caravan, followed by the handing over of certificates to all the members of the local monitoring Committee of the said agreement.
Lacroix reiterated the commitment of the United Nations to accompany the process of implementing the political agreement for peace and reconciliation.

Prime Minister Firmin Ngrebada, head of the joint delegation, showed the government's efforts to effectively implement the political agreement for peace and reconciliation.

During this ceremony, the Commissioner for peace and security of the African Union, Ambassador Smaïl Chergui addressed the population.

The signing of the local peace agreement allowed the two belligerent parties to cease hostilities in the town of Bangasou.
More than 1500 combatants and community members benefited from the community violence reduction project (TRC), thanks to this local peace agreement.
