Following a meeting of the International Support Group to Central-African Republic (CAR) in Bangui, UN peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix said, “partners and friends” of the CAR “are united and determined to advance the peace accord towards a happy conclusion.”

Together with the African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security, Smail Chergui and the Managing Director for Africa in the European External Action Service Koen Vervaeke, the UN Under Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix was in the country to meet with government officials, representatives of political parties and the civil society, as well as the members of diplomatic core, in a bid to support the peace deal between the CAR’s Government and the rebel groups.

Before departing from the Bangui international airport, Lacroix told reporters “I believe we had a very positive and very productive visit. The fact that we have here united three organizations which are important and engaging partners to the Central African Republic show once again the determination and the fact that the CAR has a lot of friends, not just in name, but also in action.”

The conflict in CAR flared up mainly along religious lines in 2013 displacing one in five Central Africans, according to the UN Office for Humanitarian Affiars, which also estimate that the CAR refugee population in neighbouring countries is 573,000.
