Storyline

The recent missile launched by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) serve “only to increase tensions in the region,” a United Nations spokesperson said today (6 May).

On Friday ( 4 May), the DPRK launched a number of short-range missiles into the Sea of Japan.

Answering a question from a journalist, Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General said, “we are very much aware of the recent launches by the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” and that “such an action serves only to increase tensions in the region.”

Dujarric also said “the Secretary-General continues to closely follow the developments and encourages all parties to continue their dialogue to advance sustainable peace and complete and verifiable denuclearization on the Korean peninsula.”

If the missile launched on Friday included a launch of a banned ballistic missile, that will be a first such test by the DPRK since November 2017, when it claimed a successful test of an intercontinental ballistic missile.
