3. SOUNDBITE (English) Riyad al-Maliki, Foreign Affairs Minister of the Palestinian National Authority:
“When the US, prior to announcing its plan, recognizes Jerusalem as the so-called capital of Israel, and claim they are entitled to take such a sovereign decision that is in blatant violation of international law and UN Security Council resolutions and pretend it has no implication on peace, it is not possible to have faith in such efforts. Every decision the US administration has taken since, has simply confirmed its disregard for Palestinian lives and for Palestinian rights, and for the international consensus, and for the law.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Riyad al-Maliki, Foreign Affairs Minister of the Palestinian National Authority:
“For decades now, the Palestinian people have been the target of Israeli policies aiming at displacing and replacing them on their own land. Palestine refugees constitute the largest and the most protracted refugee situation in the world, and the Palestinian people continue to endure the longest occupation in contemporary history.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Riyad al-Maliki, Foreign Affairs Minister of the Palestinian National Authority:
“For Palestinians the colonialism has disrupted their daily lives and is a constant infringement on their exercise of their inalienable rights, including to self-determination. It is an invasion of their land, of their property, of their lives, and of their hopes. It dictates if they live or die, if a tree stands or is uprooted, if families can be together or are separated, where you are allowed to go, and where you are not.”
8. Wide shot, ECOSOC Chambers
9. SOUNDBITE (English) Jason Greenblatt, Special Representative for International Negotiations:
“The vision for peace that we will soon put forward will be realistic and implementable, but it will require compromises from both sides. Our team has attempted to look at these issues with a fresh perspective. We have recognized the current reality, but also what remains possible. It is a serious effort to lay out the core issues of the conflict in enough detail that everyone will be able to imagine what peace could look like. This is the right package of compromises for both sides to take in order to leave the past behind and try to start a new chapter where there can be tremendous hope an opportunity in the region.”

Storyline

During an Arria-formula meeting on Israel’s construction of settlements, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki said, “when the US prior to announcing its plan, recognizes Jerusalem as the so-called capital of Israel,” in contravention to Council resolutions and international law, “it is not possible to have faith in such efforts.”

al-Maliki said, “every decision the US administration has taken since, has simply confirmed its disregard for Palestinian lives and for Palestinian rights, and for the international consensus, and for the law.”

The Palestinian Foreign Minister said “for decades now, the Palestinian people have been the target of Israeli policies aiming at displacing and replacing them on their own land. Palestine refugees constitute the largest and the most protracted refugee situation in the world, and the Palestinian people continue to endure the longest occupation in contemporary history.”

He said, “for Palestinians the colonialism has disrupted their daily lives and is a constant infringement on their exercise of their inalienable rights, including to self-determination. It is an invasion of their land, of their property, of their lives, and of their hopes. It dictates if they live or die, if a tree stands or is uprooted, if families can be together or are separated, where you are allowed to go, and where you are not.”

Representing the United States, it’s Special Representative for International Negotiations, Jason Greenblatt, said the President Donald Trump's long-awaited Middle East peace “will be realistic and implementable,” but “will require compromises from both sides.”

Greenblatt said the team, led by Senior Advisor Jared Kushner,
“has attempted to look at these issues with a fresh perspective.”

He said the plan “is a serious effort to lay out the core issues of the conflict in enough detail that everyone will be able to imagine what peace could look like.”

Today’s informal meeting, “Israeli Settlements and Settlers: Core of the Occupation, Protection Crisis and Obstruction of Peace,” took place at the initiative of the Permanent Missions to the UN of Indonesia, Kuwait, and South Africa.
