Storyline

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres “strongly condemned” the attack on a Catholic church in central Burkina Faso that left six dead, a UN spokesperson read in a statement on Monday.

According to reports, gunmen stormed a Catholic church in Dablo, in central-north of Burkina Faso, killing six men, including a priest, whil serving the Sunday Mass. The attackers then burned the church.

Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General read a statement Monday (13 May) in New York in which, he said, the Secretary-General “expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes speedily recovery to the injured. He recalls the sanctity of all places of worship and hope the perpetrators can be swiftly brought to justice.”

“The Secretary-General conveys the solidarity of the United Nations to the government and the people of Burkina Faso in this difficult moment for the nation,” Haq read further, urging “all citizens of Burkina Faso to stand firmly with one another across communities and not to succumb to efforts to sow discord and breed further violence.”

“The UN stands ready to assists in any way it can,” finished Haq.

The landlocked African nation has been battling a surge in attacks by groups affiliated with Al Qaeda, ISIL and the local Ansarul Islam since 2016.
