World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “primary health care is at the heart of the Immunization Agenda 2030,” adding that “we cannot achieve health for all without vaccines for all.”

Speaking at the opening of the World Health Assembly today (20 May) in Geneva, WHO’s Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus summarized his Organzations achievements from the past year and noting that the world has made great progress towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Ghebreyesus reiterated primary health care is where the battle for human health is won or lost. He said, “primary health care is at the heart of the Immunization Agenda 2030, our new strategic initiative, which we are designing with you, to maximize the power of vaccines, because we cannot achieve health for all without vaccines for all.”

He also noted that WHO responded to 481 emergencies and potential emergencies in 141 countries last year.

On Ebola, Ghebreyesus said, “we are not just fighting a virus. We’re fighting insecurity. We’re fighting violence. We’re fighting misinformation. We’re fighting mistrust. And we’re fighting the politicization of an outbreak.”

The WHO’s chief noted that a new division of emergency preparedness is added in addition to the existing work on emergency response.

Ghebreyesus also said, “leaders from national and city governments made more than 90 voluntary commitments, and set an aspirational goal to reduce the number of deaths from air pollution by two-thirds by 2030.”

The World Health Assembly is the decision-making body of WHO. It is attended by delegations from all WHO Member States and focuses on a specific health agenda prepared by the Executive Board. The main functions of the World Health Assembly are to determine the policies of the Organization, appoint the Director-General, supervise financial policies, and review and approve the proposed programme budget. The Health Assembly is held annually in Geneva, Switzerland.
