“I am keenly aware of the importance of continued wide-based international support, support to ensure that Iraq leaves its violent past behind, to ensure that Iraq does not slip back into the turmoil from which it so recently emerged. In other words: to prevent ISIL from regaining a strong foothold in Iraq a long-term approach is critical.”

“A full year after national elections, ministerial appointments have yet to be made to the key posts: Interior, Defence, Justice and Education. Storyline

The Security Council today (21 May) unanimously voted to extend the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) for another year. The Head of UNAMI, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, called for “continued wide-based international support” to “ensure that Iraq leaves its violent past behind” and “does not slip back into the turmoil from which it so recently emerged.

In other words, Hennis-Plasschaert said, “to prevent ISIL from regaining a strong foothold in Iraq a long-term approach is critical.”

In her briefing to the Council, Hennis-Plasschaert noted that “a full year after national elections, ministerial appointments have yet to be made to the key posts: Interior, Defence, Justice and Education.”

She said, “political parties have not yet shown themselves willing to compromise” which would be “a sign of political maturity – and a requisite for resilience.”

Iraqi Ambassador Mohammed Hussein Bahr Al-Uloom welcome the extension of the mandate and said that “despite the incomplete formation of the government, it was formed based on the independence and competence of its members and it has become capable of implementing its programme.”

He said, “many issues have seen progress and are being monitored, in the fields of security, military, culture, economy, human rights, openness to neighbouring countries, and regional states as well.”

Today’s resolution emphasizes “the importance of the stability, prosperity, and security of Iraq for the people of Iraq, the region, and the international community, particularly in light of Iraq s territorial victory over the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and “decides to extend the mandate of the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) until 31 May 2020.”
