UN Youth Envoy Jayathma Wickramanayake today (17 Jun) visited the Za’atari refugee camp in Jordan where she met with Syrian refugee women and children and participated in activities supported by various UN agencies.
At UNICEF’s Makani Centre in the Za’atari refugee camp, the Youth Envoy held discussions with Youth and Life Skill participants on their experience in the programme and the impact of skills-building and implemented initiatives.
Recalling her own experience growing up in a political unsettled Sri Lanka, Wickramanayake said, “there are so many young people like you all around the world that I met when I travelled to all of the places, from my own country, and from different parts of the world. Unfortunately millions of us do not have the luxury of pursuing all our dreams, because we are confronted with so many barriers, as you mentioned, either is getting an education but then not be able to use that education or skills to find a job, or others may just be like being limited to a camp, not having the access of being free or mobile, realizing that all the rights that we were born as people too. But I think we all need to keep fighting, and keep pushing, and really not to lose that hope that we are going to achieve our dreams.”
At Makani Centre, the Envoy also listened to a presentation from youth-led social innovation programs. The youth refugee students shared their experiences, their future aspirations, and the impact of the programme.
Later during her visit at the camp, Wickramanayake visited training workshops for women which are supported by UNICEF and the Norwegian Refugees Council.
Later in the day, the Youth Envoy went to Network of Arab Youth Activities (NAYA) Youth Centre in Zarqa, where she took notes on the concerns raised by youth leaders and advocates.
