“If you compare this part of the world with Europe, you see that something like approximately 2,000 of the 32,000 deaths occurred along the US-Mexico border over the last four or five years, compared to around 17,900 in the Mediterranean region.”

“In the Mediterranean region there has been a significant fall in the number of deaths in one part of the Mediterranean, along the Central Mediterranean route, because of the lower numbers of people travelling between Libya and Italy. On the other hand, we have seen an increase in the flow of people taking what’s called the Western Mediterranean route, and as a result of an increase in numbers of people going from Morocco, Tunisia to Spain, we’ve seen a death toll increase from around 200 to 800 in 12 months between 2017 and 2018.”

Launching a new report from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on migrant deaths, one of the editors of the report, Frank Laczko, today (28 Jun) said the drowning death of a migrant father and his 23-month-old daughter trying to cross into the United States from Mexico, was “not an isolated incident.”
In fact, he said, “since 2014 we have recorded the deaths and disappearances of approximately 1,600 migrants and refugee children around the world.”
Laczko said “there are probably over 100,000 people around the world still not knowing, did my brother, sister, father, mother, daughter, son, did they die? Is it confirmed? If they died, where are they now? Where are they buried? What happened to the body?”
He noted that approximately 2,000 of the total 32,000 deaths “occurred along the US-Mexico border over the last four or five years, compared to around 17,900 in the Mediterranean region.”
Laczko pointed out that despite the outcry over the drowning death of a 5-year-old Aylan Kurdi in September 2015 in the Mediterranean, “since then we have still seen a huge number of child deaths around the world.”
Overall, he indicated that “there has been a significant fall in the number of deaths in one part of the Mediterranean, along the Central Mediterranean route, because of the lower numbers of people travelling between Libya and Italy.”
On the other hand, he said “we have seen an increase in the flow of people taking what’s called the Western Mediterranean route, and as a result of an increase in numbers of people going from Morocco, Tunisia to Spain, we’ve seen a death toll increase from around 200 to 800 in 12 months between 2017 and 2018.”
The report is entitled Fatal Journeys Tracking Lives Lost during Migration.
