6. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, United Nations:
“The Secretary-General is very much aware of reports that the Islamic Republic of Iran may have surpassed its JCPOA limits on its low enriched uranium stockpile. He is concerned by such reports. If verified such action by the Islamic Republic of Iran would not help preserve the Plan nor secure the tangible economic benefit for the Iranian people. It is essential that this issue, like other issues related to the implementation of the Plan, be addressed through the mechanisms established by the JCPOA. He encourages the Islamic Republic of Iran to continue implementing all its nuclear-related commitments under the JCPOA, as the participants continue to seek ways to overcome the considerable challenges the country faces.”

Storyline

A UN spokesperson said UN chief Antonio Guterres is concerned by reports that Iran had surpassed the limits on its low enriched uranium stockpile set in the nuclear agreement reached in 2015 known as the JCPOA adding that such actions “would not help preserve the Plan nor secure the tangible economic benefit for the Iranian people.”

In response to questions by reporters in New York today (01 Jul), UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said it was essential that this issue, like other issues related to the implementation of the Plan, be addressed through the mechanisms established in the JCPOA.

He said Guterres encourages Iran to continue implementing all its nuclear-related commitments under the JCPOA, “as the participants continue to seek ways to overcome the considerable challenges the country faces.”

Earlier today, IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano said his Agency could verify that Iran’s total enriched uranium stockpile exceeded 300kg of UF6 enriched up to 3.67% U-235, or the equivalent in different chemical forms.

The JCPOA was reached in 2015 between Iran, the European Union, China, France, Russia, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States over Iran’s nuclear programme. The United States has since withdrawn from the agreement.
