Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin said that despite efforts made, “progress is slow” on many Sustainable Development Goals, adding that “our collective ambition for realizing the 2030 Agenda hinges on how we manage the evolving risks and challenges, and whether we seize the social, economic and environmental opportunities before us.”

Speaking at a High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development Goals, Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin reiterated that the 17 Sustainable Development Goals enshrined in the 2030 Agenda, are the blueprint for an inclusive and sustainable development that leaves no one behind.

He highlighted that the international community continues to face critical challenges to the implementation of the Goals, and the clock is ticking.

He said, “the most vulnerable people and countries continue to suffer the most – including countries in special situations and in conflict and post-conflict settings. The global response thus far has not been ambitious enough.”

Also addressing the delegates, Vice President of Economic and Social Council Valentin Rybakov said “addressing inequalities requires our focus on policies that not only aim to leave no one behind, but also that address the mechanism that leads to concentration of wealth and power at the top.”

This year’s theme for the High Level Political Forum is Empowering people and ensuring inclusiveness and equality.

The HLPF today takes stock of where we are in terms of SDG progress and identify challenges and gaps in SDG achievement. Speakers bring various perspectives on the follow up and review of implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs. They will indicate what they see as priorities for the political leadership and point to urgent multi-stakeholder action needed to accelerate progress.

The discussions of the HLPF under the auspices of ECOSOC will contribute to the preparations of the HLPF under the auspices of the General Assembly – the SDG Summit to be convened in September 2019.
