4. SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations:
“The evidence is clear: development is not sustainable if it is not fair and inclusive -- and rising inequality hinders long-term growth. Alongside the impacts of globalization and rapid technological change, we see today how inequality raises economic anxiety, erodes public trust, and undermines social cohesion, human rights, peace and prosperity. At the same time, we see mounting evidence of the transformative results of equality and inclusion -- particularly of women – in higher Gross Domestic Product, greater stability, and enhanced private sector performance and institutional effectiveness.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations:
“The people of the world do not want half measures or empty promises. They are demanding transformative change that is fair and sustainable. Let us use the world gathering in September to ratchet up the ambition and highlight the imperative of inclusion. And, together, let us kickstart a decade of delivery and action for people and planet.”

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Mary Robinson, Chair, The Elders:
“We won’t overcome the key existential challenges facing our world today, from nuclear weapons to climate change, if we spurn cooperation. Nor when we assert that one particular nation is greater than another and should not be constrained beyond its self‐interest. What sort of world do we want to leave to our children and grandchildren? Is it one of walls and barbed‐wire fences, where a privileged few live in comfort whilst the poor and marginalised face climate chaos, discrimination, persecution and violence? Or is it one where the voices and talents of all members of society are heard and valued, where human rights are cherished and championed, and where decisions are made in the interest of the next hundred years and not the next news headline?”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Mary Robinson, Chair, The Elders:
“It is grotesquely unfair that the poorest and most vulnerable people on the planet, who have contributed the least to carbon emissions and other forms of environmental pollution, are paying the highest price as temperatures and sea waters rise.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English) Richard Curtis, Screenwriter, Producer and Film Director, SDG Advocate:
“No‐one denies we’re all in a boat on a wild sea – we have to use the skills of everyone – some to build the boat – some to guide it – some to row the boat – some when the boat sinks, like the refugee Yusra Mardini, to grab the ropes and swim the boat to safety.”

Storyline

UN chief Antonio Guterres said, “The evidence is clear: development is not sustainable if it is not fair and inclusive -- and rising inequality hinders long-term growth.”

Speaking at opening of the High-Level Political Forum Ministerial Segment today (16 Jul), UN Secretary-General said that for development to be fully inclusive, countries must dramatically scale up public and private investments for the Sustainable Development Goals; take global climate action in a manner that reduces inequality by creating jobs and safeguarding the environment; step up the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration; and strengthen their commitments to justice, tolerance, gender equality and human rights.

He said the people of the world “do not want half measures or empty promises. They are demanding transformative change that is fair and sustainable.” He called on countries to use the UN meeting in September to “ratchet up the ambition and highlight the imperative of inclusion.”

Mary Robinson, Chair of The Elders said the 2030 Agenda is one of the most important diplomatic achievements of this century, and together with the Paris Agreement on climate change, they are tangible proof of the benefits of multilateralism and a rebuke to the narrow agendas of nationalism, isolationism and self‐interest.

Robinson said it was “grotesquely unfair” that the poorest and most vulnerable people on the planet, who have contributed the least to carbon emissions and other forms of environmental pollution, “are paying the highest price as temperatures and sea waters rise.”

Screenwriter, producer and film director Richard Curtis also spoke at the meeting in his role as a SDG advocate. He told delegates that, through his work in Project Everyone, found that the SDGs had so many possible partners.

Curtis said there was a unique opportunity right now because next year it will be 2020, a third of the way to 2030. He added that the SDGs provide a unique roadmap to guide us to become the first generation to end extreme poverty, the last generation to be threatened by climate change and the most determined generation to end inequality and injustice.
