Speakers included UN Secretary-General António Guterres and María Fernanda Espinosa, President of the General Assembly. The theme for Mandela Day this year, is “Take action, inspire change!”

This special meeting provided the occasion to celebrate and keep alive Nelson Mandela’s legacy and unique contribution to the service of humanity, including promotion of freedom, justice, democracy, human rights, and gender equality; as well as his extensive work in the field of conflict prevention, reconciliation, and the promotion of culture of peace throughout the world.

In keeping with the decision of the General Assembly on the format of commemorative meetings, this meeting featured statements from regional groups and the host country, following the opening segment.
