Responding to a journalist's question on the government of India's decision to revoke Indian-administered Kashmir’s special status, a UN spokesperson said, “we are following with concern the tense situation in the region” and urged “all parties to exercise restraint.”
The spokesperson, Stephan Dujarric, today (5 Aug) told reporters in New York that “over the past few days the UN Military Observer Group in India And Pakistan, otherwise known as UNMOGIP, has observed and reported an increase in military activity along the line of control.”
Article 370 of India’s constitution, which has now been revoked, granted significant autonomy to the state of Kashmir.
UNMOGIP, established in January 1949, observes and reports on the parties’ adherence to the ceasefire along the Line of Control and the Working Boundary.
