5. SOUNDBITE (English) Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General:
“Over the last few days, we have seen in the broader Middle East reports of drone attacks, missile attacks and air strikes all over the region – Israel and Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq as well as Saudi Arabia, all since Friday. I think all of these reports are of concern to us. We’re continuing to follow the situation closely. And I think as the Secretary-General has said and consistently maintained, the Middle East region cannot afford any additional turmoil.”

The United Nations (UN) today (26 Aug) urged maximum restraint following reports of Israeli drones in Lebanon and other recent activity across the region.
Responding to a question about reports of Israeli drones in Beirut suburbs, Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, said the United Nations was not in a position to independently verify or confirm the reports. He said the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) remained engaged in its area of operation, which remained calm, aiming to prevent any incidents that could endanger the cessation of hostilities.
Dujarric said, “This is a good time to reiterate our appeal to all concerned to cease violations of Resolution 1701 and to fully implement its provisions. The UN calls on the parties to exercise maximum restraint, both in action and in rhetoric.”
Regarding the bigger picture in the region, Dujarric said, “Over the last few days, we have seen in the broader Middle East reports of drone attacks, missile attacks and air strikes all over the region – Israel and Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq as well as Saudi Arabia, all since Friday.”
Expressing concern about the reports, he said, “We’re continuing to follow the situation closely. And I think as the Secretary-General has said and consistently maintained, the Middle East region cannot afford any additional turmoil.”
