"We distribute food to people whose lives have been touched by the disease, whether directly or indirectly as a contact. We provide logistic support to WHO and government and other partners by providing transport and storage. Lastly but most importantly we provide air transport to health workers.”

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is using food distribution to help address the outbreak of Ebola.
Every Ebola case has contact with roughly 50 people. Food distribution is an incentive for some contacts who are otherwise hiding, to come forward and also a way to trace and register the contacts and also keep them at home and fed during the 21 days of the incubation period – the time needed to know if a person is infected.
Susana Rico, WFP Emergency Coordinator in Beni, said, “The food essentially stops people from moving during the period when they are considered contacts and they must be followed. WFP distributes food to affected communities while also helping the World Health Organization, the Government and other partners by providing transport and storage. Rico said, “Lastly but most importantly we provide air transport to health workers.”
The overall fatality rate for Ebola cases is 67 per cent.
