I have tremendous admiration for the resilience and capacity of the people of North Kivu, the Congolese people who have suffered greatly. Our solidarity with the armed forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo in their fight against terrorism, a threat not only for the Congo but for all Africa and the whole world. We are completely beside the Congolese authorities in the fight against the ADF. Of course, our support also goes to the Congolese authorities so that the armed groups are gradually eliminated, and the state authority can resume everywhere. The security of the Congolese people and the people of North Kivu is for us an essential priority and also all the aspects of cooperation for development and for humanitarian response. Of course, there are also major health concerns today, there is measles, there is malaria, there is cholera, and now the terrible drama of Ebola, we are entirely alongside the Congolese authorities and the Congolese people to try to better respond to all these challenges.”

Guterres was welcomed by the North Kivu Province governor, Carly Nzanzu Kasivita and other local officials, as well as UN senior officials based in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Just after his arrival, the UN chief had a meeting with local authorities. He expressed his solidarity and the UN’s solidarity with the Congolese people, especially the people of North Kivu province affected by insecurity and diseases, including Ebola.
