Storyline

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visited the Munigi transit centre for ex-combatants in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

During his visit to Goma in the province of North Kivu today (31 Aug), Guterres visited the site which was constructed by the UN peacekeeping mission in the country (MONUSCO).

Outside Goma town, the North Kivu provincial capital, the settlement was set up to ease the disarmament process and to help reintegrate rebels who have voluntarily surrendered into their communities.

As of today, there are 30 individuals in the Munigi transit centre, including 21 Congolese, four Rwandan, two Malawian, and one Ugandan ex-combatant, as well as two Rwandan dependents.

Antonio Guterres had a meeting with the Chiefs of the Company Operating Base (COB), the MONUSCO Force protecting the transit centre.

The UN Secretary-General also visited the UN Emergency Ebola Response Coordination site in Goma where he was shown a photo exhibition on the fight against the Ebola virus disease affecting the area and held a meeting with the team there and other senior UN officials.
