4. SOUNDBITE (English) Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General:
“We have indeed received a letter from DPRK authorities. We are in dialogue with the government at this point on the issue of cutting international staff in DPRK. I think it bears restating that the UN and international NGOs reached over 2 million people with humanitarian aid in 2018, including food security, nutrition, and health projects. Current UN operations already have a light footprint on the ground and continued capacity at current levels is vital for ensuring continued UN support for critical food security, water, nutrition programming, as well as mobilizing resources.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General:
“We were informed of the switch on the lead in terms of the person who will represent the DPRK in the official meeting at the UN. It’s their sovereign decision. The Secretary-General obviously looks forward toward dialogue with the representative coming from Pyongyang.”

Following a letter sent by DPRK authorities to Secretary-General António Guterres requesting a reduction in the number of international staff deployed in the country, spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stressed that “current UN operations already have a light footprint on the ground and continued capacity at current levels is vital for ensuring continued UN support for critical food security, water, nutrition programming, as well as mobilizing resources.”
Dujarric noted that “the UN and international NGOs reached over 2 million people with humanitarian aid in 2018, including food security, nutrition, and health projects.”
Regarding the announcement that the Foreign Minister of the DPRK, Ri Yong Ho, will not attend the annual General Assembly general debate later this month at UN Headquarters in NY, Dujarric said
“it’s their sovereign decision” and added that “the Secretary-General obviously looks forward toward dialogue with the representative coming from Pyongyang.”
