4. SOUNDBITE (English) Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General:
“The Secretary-General’s position has always been clear and consistent: unilateral actions are not helpful in the peace process. Our position today is unchanged and is reflected in relevant UN resolutions. Any Israeli decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction, administration, in the occupied West Bank is without any international legal effect. Such a prospect would be devastating to the potential of reviving negotiations, regional peace, and the very essence of a two-state solution.”

Following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement of his plans to annex West Bank settlements if re-elected, a UN spokesperson today (10 Sep) said, “any Israeli decision to impose its laws, jurisdiction, administration, in the occupied West Bank is without any international legal effect.”
The spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, said Secretary-General António Guterres’ position “has always been clear and consistent: unilateral actions are not helpful in the peace process.”
Dujarric said, “such a prospect would be devastating to the potential of reviving negotiations, regional peace, and the very essence of a two-state solution.”
According to news reports, Netanyahu has said that the US peace plan, which is expected to be released after the upcoming Israeli elections, would provide an opportunity for Israel to annex the West Bank and other areas.
