Storyline

Thousands of people marched for climate justice today (20 Sep) in New York City, ahead of next week’s United Nations' climate summit.

Many of the protesters took the day off from work or school to participate in what was billed as a climate strike.

Participants expressed support for a major Climate Action Summit being convened by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. Set to open on 23 September, it will involve world leaders as well as prominent individuals from civil society, the private sector, local activists and others committed to a more sustainable future.

The Summit is expected to put forward ambitious plans outlined in the landmark Paris Agreement. A special climate summit for youth on Saturday, the first of its kind, will bring young leaders and innovators together to further address the climate emergency.

UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore in a statement warned that climate change has the potential to undermine most of the gains made in child survival and development over the past 30 years, saying that there is perhaps no greater threat facing the rights of the next generation of children.
