The fighting that took place from 1 to 14 September between the armed FPRC and MLCJ movements in Birao, in the far northeastern part of the Central African Republic, has left tens of thousands displaced. Many of them fled near the UN peacekeeping base base at the airport. The UN peacekeeping mission MINUSCA has taken steps to secure these IDP sites as part of its mandate to protect civilians.
"We have almost 14,000 IDPs just near our camp. It's not a simple task. Birao, "explains the Commander of the Zambian contingent of the Minusca in Birao, Lt. Col. Teddy Tembo.
The displaced are grateful to MINUSCA for their actions in favor of their safety.
"Here, there is security," he said, "we would not be safe, we would not be safe." said one of the IDPs, Zacharia Adam.
Local authorities and MINUSCA are conducting sensitization sessions on the prohibition of weapons in IDP sites.
"We are talking to the leadership of Birao so that we do not have to approach IDP camps," says Lt. Col. Teddy Tembo.
The NGOs were able to resume their activities in the camps, thanks to the actions of the MINUSCA in favor of the security of the IDPs.
"Really, for the moment, the IDP site is secure." There are not too many difficulties, "notes Aroun Salet, regional coordinator of the NGO ODESCA.
Displaced people in Birao need urgent humanitarian assistance. The MINUSCA helps them to improve the sanitary situation where most of them found refuge.
