A high-level joint mission composed of representatives of the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN) and the European Union (EU) arrived in Bangui today (4 Oct) to assess the implementation of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement.
Upon the arrival of the joint delegation in Bangui, the AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, Smail Chergui, said, “we are back to evaluate the implementation of the Peace and national reconciliation agreement, and to see, jointly with the country's authorities, what challenges we are confronting."
It is the second high-level joint mission since the signing of the peace agreement signed on 6 February in Bangui, with 14 armed groups.
The UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations, Jean-Pierre Lacroix. Declared, "you see that the African Union, the European Union, and the United Nations are still united to support the Central African Republic and the peace agreement. As Smail Chergui said, we are here to evaluate the progress of the implementation of the peace agreement, and to listen to everyone, all those who are involved, all Central Africans. And then look at what to do, the points of tension. And how can we help implement the peace agreement, which is, remains, and will remain the only way for peace in the Central African Republic."
The Director General-Africa of the European Service for External Action of the EU, Koen Vervaeke, said, "there will be elections next year, so it's time to move on. And as colleagues have said, we are going to look at the progress, the remaining challenges, and how together we can move forward.”
During their four-day visit to the Central African Republic, the joint delegation will meet with the highest authorities of the Central African Republic, the political class, civil society, guarantors and facilitators of the Agreement, as well as the diplomatic corps accredited in the Central African Republic.
