The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi welcomed today’s awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed as a huge testament to his efforts to bring peace in his region and beyond.
In a statement released today (11 Oct), Grandi said Ethiopia has a long history of welcoming and hosting refugees from across the region. He added that by allowing refugees to be better integrated into society, the country is not only upholding its international refugee law obligations but is a model for other refugee hosting nations around the world.
Grandi offered his heartfelt congratulations to the Prime Minister and the people of Ethiopia, and to the Nobel Committee.
