Security Council Arria Formula Meeting on Trafficking in Persons
Next year will mark two decades since the adoption of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime and its Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons (TiP), Especially Women and Children, the so-called Palermo protocol.
Over the past years, TiP has gained recognition in terms of its importance to international peace and security.
Trafficking for sexual exploitation remains the most detected form of trafficking in persons, while conflicts significantly increase vulnerability to trafficking.
The goal of the Arria formula debate is to further the mainstreaming of TiP into the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda in a comprehensive manner that integrates human rights, gender-based as well as criminal justice perspectives. Member states participating in the debate will be asked to share best practices and come forward with concrete proposals for joint action.
The following speakers with expertise and grassroots experience on TiP, WPS and the interplay between both issues briefed the Council:
- Maria Grazia Giammarinaro, UN Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children, UNODC
- Christine Chinkin, professor at the LSE
- Cheryl Perera, Founder of OneChild
