We believe that this is due to a better knowledge of the jurisprudence of the Court, we believe that it is also due to the confidence and trust that is increasingly placed on the work of the Court, we believe that there is more predictability and stability with regards to the jurisprudence of the Court and therefore States can rely on the manner in which the jurisprudence and the judgment of the Court will be rendered and in the last four to five years the docket of the Court has actually been full.”

“And the Court actually is dealing and has dealt in the past year[s] and has among also the pending cases, cases related to all the hotspots and conflict zones around the world and therefore we try to do our best to contribute to a peaceful settlement of all these conflicts and disputes and we believe that we have done very much in terms of contributing to the reduction of tensions and to the resolution of conflicts.”

“The docket of the Court and the cases actually that have been submitted to the Court in the last twenty years has doubled, as compared to the previous years,” said the President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Judge Abdulqawi Yusuf in a first press conference by a Court’s President since the year 2000.

“We believe that this is due to a better knowledge of the jurisprudence of the Court, we believe that it is also due to the confidence and trust that is increasingly placed on the work of the Court, we believe that there is more predictability and stability with regards to the jurisprudence of the Court and therefore States can rely on the manner in which the jurisprudence and the judgment of the Court will be rendered,” explained Judge Abdulqawi Yusuf in New York on Tuesday (29 Oct).

“In the last four to five years the docket of the Court has actually been full,” added Yusuf.

According to the ICJ President, since the establishment of the Court in 1946, 177 cases were brought to it. In the last twenty years alone, the Court was presented with 59 cases regarding different disputes between States, such as environmental, use of for force, territorial and maritime border disputes, human rights disputes etc.

“And the Court actually is dealing and has dealt in the past year[s] and has among also the pending cases, cases related to all the hotspots and conflict zones around the world,” said Judge Yusuf. “Therefore, we try to do our best to contribute to a peaceful settlement of all these conflicts and disputes and we believe that we have done very much in terms of contributing to the reduction of tensions and to the resolution of conflicts,” he added.

The ICJ President is in New York on the occasion of the International Law Week and he is expected to present his annual report to the UN General Assembly on the works of the Court, address the Security Council and meet with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guteres and other senior UN officials.
