“UNFCCC’s Executive Director, Patricia Espinosa, said that earlier today, she was informed of the decision by the Government of Chile not to host COP 25. UNFCCC is currently exploring alternative hosting options. And the President of Chile has informed the Secretary-General by phone that the Government would not be in a position to host the COP 25 meeting in Chile.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General:
“He was informed first-hand about the reasoning that they cannot provide the venue, and this is part of the reason why the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is now trying to see what kind of alternative arrangements can be made at this time.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General:
“The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change will be in dialogue to see what the best arrangements can be. One thing I would like to point out, is that there have been past precedents of cases where the hosting country is not the same as the venue countries.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General:
“The indication that we have so far, at this present moment, is that Chile would continue to serve as the presidency of the 25th session of the Conference of Parties. So, the sort of leadership that they have been providing in the past months will continue. The question really is where we can have an acceptable venue, and hopefully one can be found.”

Storyline

Amid unrest, Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera has backed out of hosting the COP 25 climate summit, a UN spokesperson said today (30 Oct).

The Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, Farhan Haq, told reporters in New York that the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Executive Director, Patricia Espinosa, was informed of the decision by the Government of Chile and “is currently exploring alternative hosting options.”

Haq said Piñera informed Secretary-General António Guterres by phone “that the Government would not be in a position to host the COP25 meeting in Chile.”

He said the reasoning behind the decision was that “they cannot provide the venue, and this is part of the reason why the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is now trying to see what kind of alternative arrangements can be made at this time.”

The spokesperson said the UNFCCC “will be in dialogue to see what the best arrangements can be” and pointed out that “there have been past precedents of cases where the hosting country is not the same as the venue countries.”

The indication so far, Haq said, “is that Chile would continue to serve as the presidency of the 25th session of the Conference of Parties” and the “leadership that they have been providing in the past months will continue.”

The UNFCCC issued a statement saying Espinosa “was informed of the decision by the Government of Chile not to host COP25 in view of the difficult situation that the country is undergoing” and is “currently exploring alternative hosting options.”
