The first ever Global Observance of World Cities Day, today (31 Oct) in Ekaterinburg, Russia attracted participants from over 40 countries to explore how innovations can improve the lives of urban residents now and in the future.
During the high-level opening session, UN-Habitat’s Executive Director, Maimunah Mohd Sharif, referred to this year’s World Cities Day theme, Changing the world: Innovations and a Better Life for Future Generations and said innovation was often born in cities and should be used to improve life for everyone.
She said, “just as cities create many of the major problems facing our planet today, including pollution climate change and waste, they are also hubs of creativity where the answers are often found.”
The event attracted over 650 participants. Following the high-level opening, there were presentations and discussions about the themes of the workshops of the previous day including from the youth, followed by a live link to World Cities Day celebrations in Bilbao, Spain, Istra, Moscow region and the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
