Storyline

Some 54 vulnerable refugees were relocated from Niger to Italy on Tuesday (05 Nov). The group included 23 children, 13 of whom had been separated from their families.

Most had previously been in detention in Libya where they faced terrible conditions, appalling human rights abuses and the risk of being caught in the country’s hostilities. Following today’s flight 913 vulnerable people previously at risk in Libya have been relocated to Italy.

The operation on Tuesday (05 Nov) was co-funded by the European Commission under the AMIF “Life Saving Assistance through humanitarian evacuations from Libya and Niger to Italy” project.

UNHCR has evacuated 5,100 refugees and asylum seekers out of Libya since 2017, including 2,913 to Niger, and 189 to Rwanda. Among intensifying violence in Libya humanitarian evacuations are a lifeline for vulnerable refugees in desperate need of security and protection. UNHCR has called on other states to come forward with more places to help bring refugees to safety.
