"While we celebrate our national day, we bury our martyrs, the civilians, the 34 of them, the eight children among them, and the slaughtering of a whole family, eight of them, including few children, that were killed by the Israeli occupying forces."

5. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Riyad Mansour, Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations:
“This enormous response by the international community came in defence of UNRWA and as a response to those who try in futility to undermine this agency and dream that they can end the cause of the refugees through this. This historic response reaffirms that the international community is supportive of UNRWA and of the cause of Palestinian refugees and will not abandon them.”

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Riyad Mansour, Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations:
“UNRWA is something good. It is one of the successful stories of the United Nations and the international community is not about to abandon it. It is supporting it, and they did through the voting, and they will keep also funding it until there is a just solution to the question of the Palestine refugees on the basis of relevant UN resolutions.”

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Riyad Mansour, Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations:
“I have nothing more to add to what Pierre Krähenbühl said, I believe, to a television station interview, in which he said, if his principled position in the Security Council, in defending the refugees and UNRWA was responsible for him losing his post, he said, I will take that as a badge of honour on my chest. It is a badge of honour on his chest. We have nothing more to add to what he said. He lost his post because he was a principled fighter for the Palestine refugee question and for UNRWA.”

11. SOUNDBITE (English) Riyad Mansour, Permanent Representative of Palestine to the United Nations:
“We were able to gather, all of us, to reduce the deficit this year to 80 million dollars. And if few countries who made pledges pay the money before the end of the year, and we expect them to do so, then we will succeed for the second year in a row in filling the gap resulting from the fact that the US administration did not pay 300 million dollars last year, and did not pay a penny from the 65 million dollars that they usually do.”

Storyline

Speaking to reporters today (15 Nov) Palestinian Ambassador Riyad Mansour said, “while we celebrate our national day, we bury our martyrs” referring to the death of 34 civilians, including “the slaughtering of a whole family, eight of them, including few children, that were killed by the Israeli occupying forces."

The Israeli military, according to press reports, admitted targeting a building in Gaza on Wednesday (13 Nov) and mistakenly killing a family of eight.

Referring to the extension to the mandate of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) for three years by the General Assembly’s 4th committee, Mansour said, “this enormous response by the international community came in defence of UNRWA and as a response to those who try in futility to undermine this agency and dream that they can end the cause of the refugees through this.”
He said, “this historic response reaffirms that the international community is supportive of UNRWA and of the cause of Palestinian refugees and will not abandon them.”

Mansour said, “UNRWA is something good. It is one of the successful stories of the United Nations and the international community is not about to abandon it. It is supporting it, and they did through the voting, and they will keep also funding it until there is a just solution to the question of the Palestine refugees on the basis of relevant UN resolutions.”

Asked about the resignation last week of UNRWA’s chief Pierre Krähenbühl, Mansour said it was “a badge of honour on his chest” that “defending the refugees and UNRWA was responsible for him losing his post.”

On UNRWA’s budget, he said, “We were able to gather, all of us, to reduce the deficit this year to 80 million dollars. And if few countries who made pledges pay the money before the end of the year, and we expect them to do so, then we will succeed for the second year in a row in filling the gap resulting from the fact that the US administration did not par 300 million dollars last year, and did not pay a penny from the 65 million dollars that they usually do.”
