The International Court of Justice today (10 Dec) opened its public hearings in the case alleging genocide in Myanmar against the Rohingya population filed by The Gambia.
The hearings are expected to continue until Thursday during which the Court will listen to oral observations by both parties. Navi Pillay, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and Claus Kress, a professor of international law, were selected by The Gambia and Myanmar respectively to act as ad hoc judges in the case.
The Gambia had filed the case an against Myanmar at the International Court of Justice on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi was present in court to defend the country against accusations of genocide. She is due to address the court on Wednesday.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has also authorized an investigation into alleged crimes against humanity committed against the Rohingya, while criminal complaints of genocide and crimes against humanity have been filed in Argentina under the principle of universal jurisdiction.
