Storyline

World leaders and ministers arrived Tuesday (17 Dec) in Geneva for the first-ever Global Refugee Forum.

The first-ever Global Refugee Forum, a world meeting on refugees, is taking place from 16 to 18 December 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland. UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and the Government of Switzerland are jointly hosting this global meeting at the Palais des Nations, the home of the United Nations Office at Geneva.

The global conference is the first high-level gathering to follow up on the practical implementation of the Global Compact on Refugees, which was affirmed by the UN General Assembly in New York in December 2018. It is being attended by some 70 foreign ministers and deputy foreign ministers, as well as heads of state, and UN Secretary-General Antonion Guterres.

The aim of the Forum is to give impetus towards achieving the Compact’s objectives and to translate international solidarity into concrete action. It showcases high-level, significant pledges and contributions, and highlights good practices by States, refugees, development actors, the private sector, UN entities, civil society organizations, academics and faith leaders, among others, in the service of the forcibly displaced.
