“To drag us to negotiate after they steal another 40 per cent of the occupied West Bank, and to negotiate over four years the details of the left-overs in which Israel has the upper hand – and security issues in the hands of Israel are paramount – is not a recipe for peace or justice. It is a recipe for the destruction of the national rights of the Palestinian people, and it will not fly. It is not acceptable. And those who think that the Palestinian people will evaporate, they will not. Those who think that the Palestinian people will pack up and leave, they will not.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Riyad Mansour, Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations:
“We have fully agreed to start a plan to confront this scheme, the scheme of Trump and Netanyahu, which aims to end the entire Palestinian national cause. A high-level delegation, possibly President Abbas himself could possibly go to Gaza to meet and agree with all the components of the Palestinian community, all Palestinians, on a daily sustained confrontation plan on the ground in the homeland, and to confront the occupation, including in the international fora.”

9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Riyad Mansour, Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations:
“Sovereignty for them and crossing and access for us. Sovereignty and security for them; and control over the crossings and everything for them - even water, and we can have civil rights and the right to access places of worship to pray. How could the Palestinian accept - 103 years after the Balfour declaration – all these issues? We are a titanic people. Our roots in the land are deep, and we cannot be uprooted.”

Storyline

Palestinian ambassador the UN Riyad Mansour said the plan announced yesterday by the Trump administration is “not a peace plan. It is a plan furthest away from peace. It is a plan to destroy the national aspirations of the Palestinian people, of fulfilling their inalienable rights to self-determination, to statehood and resolving the rights of the refugees.”

Speaking to reporters at the UN headquarters in New York today (29 Jan), Mansour said President Mahmoud Abbas will be visiting the Security Council within the next two weeks to present to the international community with Palestine’s reaction to the Trump administration’s plan. He said the Palestinian delegation was consulting with Member States to present a strong draft resolution to the Security Council and hoped to have the text ready in time to be voted on during Abbas’s visit.

Mansour stressed that any plan not rooted in the international consensus to end the occupation was bound to fail, adding that Palestinians have always been ready to negotiate based on previous agreements and UN resolutions.

And those who think that the Palestinian people will evaporate, they will not. Those who think that the Palestinian people will pack up and leave, they will not.”

The Palestinian ambassador said the leadership and people of Palestine showed unity in a meeting yesterday which was attended by all Palestinian political parties, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

Mansour called on those who have not read the proposal to read it and pay attention to the details. He said there was no reference to Palestinian sovereignty in the document, and it ends the right of return for millions of Palestinian refugees. He added that the document also calls for displacing Israeli citizens of Palestinian descent, in an effort to decrease the Arab population of Israel.

The Palestinian ambassador told reporters that President Abbas would be attending a Ministerial meeting of the Arab League this Saturday in Cairo to discuss the Trump administration’s plan.
