Storyline

More than 500,000 children have been displaced by intense violence in northwest Syria since 1 December 2019, with tens of thousands of children and their families now living in tents and the open-air amid very cold weather and rains. Since the beginning of the year, 77 children were killed and injured due to the escalation of violence in the area.

Recent winter rains, snowfall and extremely cold weather have worsened the already harsh conditions, adding to the vulnerability of displaced families and children and exacerbating their need for urgent humanitarian assistance as well as basic services.

UNICEF reiterates that the protection of children and the civilian infrastructure they rely on in northwest Syria and across the country must be spared in combat by all parties to the conflict.
