Out of nearly 550 health facilities in northwest Syria, only about half are operational. The Director-General of the World Health Organization Tedros Ghebreyesus said dozens of health facilities have suspended services in the Idlib and Aleppo and stressed that “health facilities and health workers are not a legitimate target in conflict, and attacks on health are a breach of international law.”

Speaking prior to his daily briefing on the COVID-19 outbreak, Tedros said since the first of December, dozens of health facilities have suspended services in the Idlib and Aleppo areas. He said, “Out of nearly 550 health facilities in northwest Syria, only about half are operational.” Tedros added that two attacks on health facilities took place yesterday afternoon on two separate hospitals in Aleppo Governorate, which resulted in no casualties.

The WHO chief said nearly 900,000 people have been displaced, including half a million children.
