And this is the best symbol that we can give, for a world in peace, and for a world in which there is mutual respect, and there is the acceptance of what is different, recognizing that diversity is a blessing, is a richness, not a threat.”

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres wrapped his three-day visit to Pakistan today, after participating in a polio vaccination campaign and visiting the Kartarpur Corridor, which allows Sikhs to travel between nearby holy sites on either side of the India-Pakistan border.
The Secretary-General met with polio workers as he visited a kindergarten school in Lahore during the first nationwide polio campaign of the year. He gave three students the polio vaccine. He said he appealed to all leaders, including religious and community leaders, to fully support the Government of Pakistan, and other governments around the world, to make sure that we will be able to fully eradicate polio.
“I believe that Polio is one of the few diseases we can eradicate in the world in the next few years. And it’s a priority for the United Nations and I’m extremely happy to see it is a clear priority for the government of Pakistan and for the Government of Punjab,” Guterres said.
The global effort to permanently eliminate all cases of polio began in 1988, led by the World Health Organization. Number of cases reduced by 99.95% in 2019 from 1988 when eradication efforts began. Pakistan remains one of three countries where the disease is still classified as endemic. With the help of international agencies and donors, the country has made progress in the eradication of the disease from the general populace. However, 110 reported cases since January 2019 are a cause of concern.
Earlier today, the Secretary-General spoke at the Lahore University of Management Sciences, LUMS, saying that, as we celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations, he wants to reach out and hear from youth. He said “I believe that the youth must have a fundamental voice, but not only a fundamental voice, but a fundamental role in the shaping of our common future. And I want to make the UN 75 anniversary the moment in which I will try to talk as little as possible, and to listen as much as possible.”
The Secretary-General visited a Gurdwara, or Sikh Temple, in the Pakistani town of Kartarpur and said he was honoured to visit the Kartarpur Corridor between the countries, which he called “a corridor of hope.”
He told the press after his visit, “It is wonderful to see at the same shrine, today, Sikhs, Muslims, Christians, maybe Hindus, all worshipping in harmony, and in peace. Gurdwara Kartarpur Saheb is believed to have been built on the site where Guru Nanak, founder of Sikh religion, breathed his last. The holy site, apart from serving the Sikh community of Pakistan and around the world, is also visited by pilgrims from India, as the gurdwara is located close to Pakistan’s international border with India. It is around 150 kilometers from provincial capital of Punjab province, Lahore. To facilitate visa-free access to Indian Sikh pilgrims, Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan announced the establishment of Kartarpur Corridor in September 2018. The “Corridor of Peace” was inaugurated by the Prime Minister on 9 November 2019 on the eve of the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. The Corridor links Gurdwara Kartarpur Saheb with Gurdwara Dera Baba Nanak, across the border in India.
